Roland D50 Sample Collection 007

You would assume that there are only so many things you can talk about a synthesiser released in 1987 but for the wonderfull Roland D-50 this simply isn't true. The Yamaha DX7 which created its sounds using Yamahas FM synthesis (for examples of DX7 sounds see our Yamaha FS1R and TX802 samples) was riding high at the time, with virtually everyone owning one. So the D-50 had strong opposition but the ace up it's sleeve may seem a liability when comparing it to todays synths.

The Roland D-50 synthesizer featured short samples of real instruments which allowed the player to create some very realistic sounds for, virtually, the first time. The size of the samples are laughable by todays standards but the synth remains in very high demand. The truth is that the synth engine is wonderful and Jean Michelle Jarre used the D50 to create an album and it is these sounds which are presented in this sample collection.

As stated most of the sounds on collection 007 are those patches used by French artist Jean Michelle Jarre. A quick recap on how we create our sample collections (as there are descriptions on the other 10 DVDs), Each of the 2,031 24-bit samples were recorded, using pro MOTU gear, from a Roland VariOS with a VC-1 D-50 card (see the SOS article at http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may05/articles/rolandvc1.htm). For each patch we took four samples an octave and seven octaves. We sample mainly for ourselves so we sample for as long as it takes to get a decent loop point where a patch has a sustained sound.

Sample collection 007 (the 120 patches are listed below) is part of our 41.66 GB Roland D50 10 DVD sample collection. This immense collection is sold at a very reduced price but you are welcome to buy the single DVD, if you really need to have these specific sounds.
