In 1987 the Roland D-50 synth was released, during a period when music was, generally dominated by the sound of the Yamaha DX7. The DX7 used a form of digital synthesis which Yamaha called FM/Frequency Modulation (for examples of DX7 sounds see our Yamaha FS1R and TX802 samples) . Although the D-50 was also a purely digital synth it used a digital representation of analog subtractive synthesis PLUS the new sam[le + synthesis method of creating sound. Using ridiculously short samples of real acoustic instruments it was possible to create a realistic attack portion of a sound followed by a more conventional synth sound for the decay, sustain and release elements.
Our nineth DVD of Roland D-50 samples focuses on Rolands excellent string sounds. As explained short samples of real strings were in the D-50 so the distinctive start of strings was surprisingly nailed. As the other stages of the string sound are very similar to saw waves the Roland D-50 was brilliant for creating string pads, leads, basses etc. For this collection we loaded the synth with the soundbank Str3&4 which contains some excellent string patches which we sampled at 24-bits using professional quality MOTU interfaces in our recording studio. Taking long samples enabled us to create extremely good loop points which is rather important with string patches. To capture the true essence of the synth we sampled 4 notes in every octave rather than the 2 per octave on our earlie collections. Our old Roland D-50 has seen better days and it is now somewhat noisey so we decided it would be better to use our trusty Roland VariOS fitted with the VC-1 D-50 Card (see http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may05/articles/rolandvc1.htm). This article insists that, using an oscilloscope, there is no difference between the two when the VariOS is set to D-50 output. However when we listened we did notice, but only on one or two patches, that there was a tiny tiny difference. Overall we favour the clean output of the VariOS. As we produce these collection primarily for our own personal use you can be sure that we have done our utmost to get the best possible samples.
