Roland D50 Sample Collection 008

The Roland D-50 synth was released in 1987 to combat the dominance of Yamahas DX7. The DX7 featured a form of sythesis which Yamaha called FM synthesis (for examples of DX7 FM sounds see our Yamaha FS1R and TX802 samples). FM is a form of digital synthesis but Roland broke new ground with the D-50 as it was a digital synth but based on a very small sample set and a form of digital subtractive synthesis this enabled the Roland D-50 to create familiar. synth sounds but also sounds which were strikingly similar to real acoustic instruments. Finally you no longer had to own a hugely expensive (and heavy) electric or acoustic piano to add the sound of a piano to your track.

Our eight DVD of Roland D-50 samples focuses on the subtractive synthesis element of the synth. We sampled the soundbank known as Analog1 and, as the name suggests, it consists of patches that sound as though they were created on an old analog subtractive synth. All of the patches sampled (please scroll down to see a list of the 64 patches sampled) were constructed using a total of 1,994 long samples. Each sample was created using 24-bit professional MOTU interfaces in our recording studio. To capture the true sound of the Roland D-50 we sampled a Roland VariOS with a VC-1 D-50 card (see the SOS article at http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may05/articles/rolandvc1.htm). For each patch we took four samples per octave for just over seven octaves. We sample mainly for ourselves so we sample for as long as it takes to get a decent loop point where a patch has a sustained sound.

Sample collection 008 (the 64 patches are listed below) is part of our 41.66 GB Roland D50 10 DVD sample collection. This immense collection is sold at a very reduced price but you are welcome to buy the single DVD, if you really want to take advantage of this cheap way into getting the D50 sound.
