Roland D50 Sample Collection 006

In 1987 most keyboard players were using the Yamaha DX7 which created its sounds using Yamahas FM synthesis (for examples of DX7 sounds see our Yamaha FS1R and TX802 samples) but this was the year of the Roland D-50 synthesizer. Using very short samples of natural sounds for the attack part of sounds the D-50 created the sustained part of its sounds using a more conventional form of digital synthesis (effectively a digital oscillator and filter). This enabled the synth to create sound extremely close to acoustic instrument while maintaining facilities for more conventional, and familiar. synth sounds.

Our sixth DVD of Roland D-50 samples picks up where DVD 5 finished with the remaining patches from Rolands PN-D50-04 Memory Card together with a selection of D50 patches of, mainly pads and strings (please scroll down to see the list of the 71 patches sampled). 2,105 24-bit samples were taken using MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) interfaces in our recording studio. To capture the soul of the Roland D-50 we sampled 4 long notes in every octave but rather than use our old D-50 we settled upon using our Roland VariOS fitted with the VC-1 D-50 Card which has a "cleaner" sound. However, if you take a look at this SOS article, http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may05/articles/rolandvc1.htm, you will see that they claim to have found no difference. For the amount of times (once or twice) that the VC-1 does differ from the D50 it isn't worth mentioning but we like to be as honest as possible (and we've never had a single complaint yet - and we hope that this remains true). We feel that the main reason everyone seems to love our samples is that we really do this out of love, sampling the sounds that we want to use (usually in Kontakt 5)
